Raptiva Maker Genentech Purchased by Roche
The pharmaceutical maker of popular U.S. drugs Valium, Tamiflu, and Raptiva, among others, is to be purchased by Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche for an estimates $46.8 billion USD. This purchase with buy the remaining 44 percent of the company that Roche does not currently own, and bring a close to what has been reported as internal company struggles.
Genentech, the self proclaimed “founder of the biotechnology industry,” was created in 1976 and produces several cancer drugs in addition to Raptiva, which was developed to help treat the moderate to severe psoriasis.
Europe & Canada Suspend Sales of Raptiva
The psoriasis treatment drug Raptiva, manufactured by Genentech/Merck corporation, was suspended by the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) on Friday. The suspension comes amid new reports of a link to a deadly brain infection known as progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.
As with most drugs that come under scrutiny by the EMEA, Canada stopped it sales the following Monday.

What happens?
The JC virus is present in approximately 85% of adults. PML is a neurological disease which is caused by the JC virus which destroys the nerve cell protecting the substance myelin, and the result is a breakdown in white matter inside the brain. When a human has a severely depressed immune system, the JC virus may becomes active, triggering PML. Raptiva is effective by suppressing T-cells that cause the inflammation of psoriasis.
What are the signs of PML?
- Weakness or inability to move
- Blurred vision
- Impaired speech
- Symptoms similar to what may appear to be meningitis
What can be done?
Seeking immediate medical treatment is the first step. The latest therapy being used is the reversal of the immune-deficient state (reversing the effects of Raptiva and improving the immune system drastically). While recovery rates have not been promising there have been drastic improvements in recent years, so getting to a hospital at the first sign is paramount.
